Who We Are

Shared Learning of Chapel Hill is an unaffiliated, non-profit, continuing education association of adult lifelong learners who enjoy sharing their knowledge in congenial groups. Shared Learning began in the 1970s as a loose amalgam of retired UNC faculty and their friends and neighbors who wished to share their curiosity about and knowledge of the world in a community of learners.

Its initial meetings were in member’s homes and then at the Church of Reconciliation in Chapel Hill. Since 1979, we have offered a variety of non-credit, daytime courses related to the hard sciences, humanities, fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, current events, and other mind-expanding topics. Over the years, we grew significantly in membership, met at different churches, began collecting dues to rent space, developed governing structures, and incorporated as a non-profit. Despite our membership growth, we strive to remain a simple community of adult learners. We invite you to join us as Learners  in the roughly two dozen Courses we offer in our Fall, Winter and Spring terms, or as Moderators (i.e., course facilitators).

Our Mission

Shared Learning Association of Chapel Hill provides noncredit, continuing education courses at low cost in a socially congenial atmosphere for retirees and other adults. Our focus is on creating a shared process of learning.

Though all courses are developed and led by volunteer members, attendees add to the educational process by asking questions and contributing their own perspective and knowledge.

Our Vision

At Shared Learning, we provide a platform for mature adults to explore their interests and passions through non-accredited courses taught by volunteer moderators. Our courses are designed to promote learning and personal growth among our community of lifelong learners.
