Why are we moving our location in January? Expand Church, where we have met for the past 8 1/2 years, is “expanding”! their activities and plans to use their space during weekdays. They have decided not to renew our lease, which expires at the end of this calendar year.

How was the choice of the new venue made?  Beginning in April, when our president Alice Parsons first learned of the Expand Church decision, members of the Shared Learning Board began scouting out possible venues for our courses. Alice appointed a search committee of 5 board members besides herself–Nancy Goudreau, Glenn Wrighton, Sheldon Becker, Hank Becker, and Meyer Liberman–who searched for possible replacement sites that would be open to providing space for us and had that space available at a rental fee that was within our budget. Three sites were visited and considered in depth and after carefully weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each, Christ United was deemed to be the best of the three.

What are some of the advantages of the Christ United venue?  Located at the entrance to Southern Village, Christ United Methodist Church is part of a thriving and exciting retail and residential community. The staff members of the church are welcoming, helpful, flexible, and capable. The church will provide us with 4 different well-lit and modern classroom settings across three adjacent buildings. The rooms include ones with built-in video monitors for projecting DVDs and Internet sites, a lounge area, a library setting, kitchen facilities, generally adequate parking, and places for our holiday and end-of-year parties and for Lindgren Lectures. Southern Village’s nearby restaurants, cafes, and a movie theatre will provide opportunities for member interaction that we have never had before.

What are the directions to getting to Shared Learning at Christ United Methodist Church?

Christ United is in the Southern Village commercial area, which is in south Chapel Hill, off of 15-501.  Shared Learning headquarters will be 105 Market Street, Chapel Hill, NC, 27516. This is Church annex Bldg 105 directly to the east of Christ United Methodist Main Church.  There is preferred Church Parking directly in back of Bldg 105, and there is other parking available in the area. Once you are there, enter Bldg 105 Receptionist’s Entrance from the Church Parking Lot. You can use 105 Market Street, Chapel Hill or 800 Market Street, Chapel Hill in your GPS system to get directions.

Directions from Chapel Hill (from the north, east, and west): Travel south on 15-501 toward Pittsboro. Make a right turn on Market Street at the Southern Village sign, and then make an immediate left turn into the Church Parking Lot Behind brick Bldg 103 and Bldg 105. After parking, find your way to the Receptionist Entrance in Bldg. 105. It’s 7-8 miles or a 15 minute drive from Expand Church to CUMC.

Directions from Fearrington/Pittsboro: Travel north on 15-501 toward Chapel Hill . Make a left turn on Market Street at the Southern Village sign, and then make an immediate left turn into the Church Parking Lot Behind brick Bldg 103 and Bldg 105. After parking, find your way to the Receptionist Entrance in Bldg. 105.
